SUMMARY:ECYM Lecture with Inez Myin-Germeys - Digital mental health for youth: From understanding to intervention
DESCRIPTION:Digital mental health for youth: From understanding to intervention \nECYM lecture with Prof. Inez Myin-Germeys \nDigital technologies are increasingly leveraged to advance our understanding of how mental health problems emerge\, unfold\, and persist in daily life contexts. In this talk\, I will present findings from the SIGMA study\, an accelerated longitudinal cohort of 2\,000 adolescents in Flanders\, and SIGMA-X\, a complementary study focusing on youth growing up in more socially and economically precarious circumstances. Both studies focus on social risk factors for mental health problems across adolescence. In addition to standard questionnaires\, participants in SIGMA and SIGMA-X took completed an Experience Sampling Method (ESM) protocol\, a digital structured diary approach that followed young people intensively for one week within their natural daily environments. This approach allowed for fine-grained insights into moment-to-moment emotional states\, social experiences\, and contextual influences. In my talk\, I will discuss the main findings of both studies\, with a particular emphasis on the daily life results. Finally\, I will explore the potential of digital mobile health tools for prevention and early intervention\, highlighting how brief\, app-based interventions can be used to transfer the intervention into the context of daily life. \nRegistration: Please email ecym@charite.de to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health: A New Paradigm To Transform Mental Health Care
DESCRIPTION:Zoom Meeting \nPatrick McGorry\nProfessor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne & Director of Orygen Youth Health and Orygen Youth Health Research Centre in Victoria\, Australia \n\nMental ill-health has become the leading health and social challenge for young people worldwide\, yet they face the poorest access to appropriate care. Existing services are often neither developmentally nor culturally responsive. In response\, a global reform movement is building new youth-friendly models of care for the critical transition period between ages 12 and 25. At the same time\, prevalence rates are rising sharply. In Australia\, for example\, mental disorders among 16–24-year-olds increased by 50% between 2007 and 2021. Similar trends are evident across high-income countries. This lecture explores the drivers of the emerging youth mental health crisis\, the societal megatrends behind it\, and the urgent need for prevention\, expanded care platforms\, innovative research\, and a strengthened\, specialized workforce. \n
