Digital mental health for youth: From understanding to intervention

ECYM lecture with Prof. Inez Myin-Germeys

Digital technologies are increasingly leveraged to advance our understanding of how mental health problems emerge, unfold, and persist in daily life contexts. In this talk, I will present findings from the SIGMA study, an accelerated longitudinal cohort of 2,000 adolescents in Flanders, and SIGMA-X, a complementary study focusing on youth growing up in more socially and economically precarious circumstances. Both studies focus on social risk factors for mental health problems across adolescence. In addition to standard questionnaires, participants in SIGMA and SIGMA-X took completed an Experience Sampling Method (ESM) protocol, a digital structured diary approach that followed young people intensively for one week within their natural daily environments. This approach allowed for fine-grained insights into moment-to-moment emotional states, social experiences, and contextual influences. In my talk, I will discuss the main findings of both studies, with a particular emphasis on the daily life results. Finally, I will explore the potential of digital mobile health tools for prevention and early intervention, highlighting how brief, app-based interventions can be used to transfer the intervention into the context of daily life.
